Learn about the first missionaries and settlers
Hermannsburg lies between Greytown and Kranskop on the R74. It is situated in an extremely picturesque area of mountains, valleys and next to the Hlimbitwa River.
There are beautifully preserved meadows which abound in wild flowers, even the rare Hilton Daisy, and a great variety of birds fly around. Explore the area on horseback or do the trails on foot.
If you visit the Mission House Museum you will follow the historical footsteps and learn about the first missionaries and settlers. There is a story behind every display, e.g. why long pipes were introduced. The Mission House Museum and the village church, Peter Paul Lutheran Church both have monumental status since 1977.
The missionaries and settlers married and had children. The oldest boarding school in KwaZulu-Natal, Hermannsburg School, was founded in 1856. The learners achieve excellent academic matric results in Independent examinations. A sound IT programme is offered in the small classes to ensure that each pupil is given the opportunity to perform at optimum level. A well balanced sport programme as well as cultural activities complements the programme. Facilities are available for: Art, Golf, Chess, Music Choir, Sailing, Canoeing, Pottery, Nature Club, Tennis, Hockey, Rugby, Athletics, Cross Country, Mountain Biking, Swimming, Horse Riding. Highlights of the year are, “Mudman (Tri-athlon sport), Schulfest, Golf Day “and several Concerts.
