Scenic steam train rides for kids & families
The train travels from Kloof to Inchanga where there is a craft market. Children will love travelling on an authentic steam locomotive, waving at passers-by. This 1hr trip takes you up some of the steepest railway gradients in South Africa (1:30 and 1:50), through one of the oldest running tunnels, Drummond Tunnel - built around 1880, and around the hills overlooking the Valley of 1000 Hills to Inchanga Station. Umgeni Steam Railway is a dedicated non-profit organisation (Registered Section-21) whose focus is to preserve steam locomotion in KwaZulu Natal. Run by a team of volunteers it relies solely on ticket sales for income.
The locomotives vary in age from 1892 through to 1954 and most of the coaches date back to the early 1940s.
At Inchanga Station the popular Inchanga Station Craft Market displays many hand crafted items. There are numerous food outlets for the weary traveller and the Inchanga Tea Garden and Railway Museum to visit. The 10.30 departure from Inchanga for Kloof allows for a sit down pub lunch and ice cold beer at the Stokers Arms Station Restaurant, before returning on the 12:30 train.
Consider steam train hire for birthdays, wedding anniversaries and special events as well as corporate events like year end functions, product launches, awards programs and team building.
