Test Driving the Arts Programme
The Playhouse Company begins its Test Driving the Arts programme for the 2016/7 financial year with a grand opening featuring a performance from five groups. The groups who will be performing are Tswana Traditional Dance (Tswana dancers); Umlazi African Jinge (Umzansi dancers); Amazing Grace (Gospel); Amabhubesi Zulu Dancers (Indlamu dancers); and Champions (Amapansula).

The Playhouse Company’s Test Driving the Arts programme is designed to showcase arts practitioners in the fields of indigenous and popular cultural entertainment. Performance genres typically featured in the series include Maskandi, Gospel, Kwaito, Afro Reggae, Imfene, Pantsula, Hip Hop, and others. For the 2016/7 financial year, approximately 600 artists will benefit from this opportunity to perform and be paid for their performances.

The Test Drive series provides workers in Durban’s CBD with regular opportunities to enjoy free lunch-time performances close to their places of work. It also fulfils a valuable role for the performing arts community as it serves as a show case for artists to be scooped up by talent scouts on the lookout for quality acts.

The Playhouse Coffee Shop will be open for light meals and drinks during and after the performances.

Charlotte's Web
Charlotte’s Web comes to vivid life in this enchanting stage adaptation by Greg King of KickstArt. This is heart-warming family entertainment that is perfect for the holidays.

Starring Mthokozisi Zulu, Belinda Henwood, Lyle Buxton, Cara Roberts, Straw Nzimande and Bryan Hiles, Charlotte's Web tells the tale of Wilbur, a prize-winning piglet and his unique friendship with an extraordinary barn spider, named Charlotte. When Wilbur is in danger, Charlotte helps him by writing messages in her web. Considered a classic in children’s literature and enjoyed by adults as well as children, Publishers Weekly listed Charlotte's Web in 2000 as the bestselling children’s paperback of all time!

The original story was illustrated with beautifully rendered, now iconic artwork by Garth Williams, which inspired the animated feature in 1973, and a live action film version of the original story which was released in 2006. There is also a popular video game based on this adaptation. The story was apparently inspired by White’s encounter with a real pig which he unsuccessfully attempted to save. He also met a real spider, whom he called Charlotte Epeira, who was immortalised as the heroine of his novel. The farmyard and barn where the story is set, has been kept off limits to the public according to the wishes of the author. Tell a friend.
